Queen Elizabeth Celebrates Her 91st Birthday

How will the Queen celebrate her 91st birthday?

Royal celebrations for the Queen’s 91st birthday will undoubtedly be well underway today but just how will she and the royal family be marking the occasion?

Last year, to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday, the celebrations were pretty huge. Her Majesty’s birthday was arguably one of the only highlights of 2019! She enjoyed the Patron’s lunch, which was attended by the royal family and a sizeable 10,000 guests.

Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain made the Queen a fabulously regal looking orange drizzle cake (which you can try out for yourself with this recipe), but what cake will the Queen be presented with this year?

It is thought the Queen’s 91st birthday will be celebrated more privately than last year. She will still enjoy the royal gun salutes; a 41 gun salute will take place in Hyde Park, a 21 gun salute in Windsor Great Park and a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London, each of which will be fired at midday.

When it comes to gifts, that’s a whole other story! We all know someone who is particularly difficult to buy for, but surely buying a present for the Queen of England takes this to a whole new stress level. Luckily, Her Majesty reportedly prefers to receive practical gifts that are not overly extravagant.

The Duchess of Cambridge previously revealed that she was so stuck for what to buy the Queen at Christmas that she decided to make homemade chutney instead. During an ITV documentary for the Queen’s 90th birthday the Duchess said: “I can remember being at Sandringham, for the first time, at Christmas. And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present.”

She added: “I was thinking, ‘Gosh, what should I give her?’ I thought back to what would I give my own grandparents. And I thought, ‘I’ll make her something.’ Which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny’s recipe of chutney.”

For the Queen’s 90th birthday she received a bag of salt from Salt Island – one of the British Virgin Islands. This was a traditional gift given to monarchs that stopped in the nineteenth century however it was revived last year. We wonder if the Queen will receive another bag this year…

An exhibition of all the unusual gifts the Queen has received during her reign is due to launch during the annual summer opening of the staterooms at Buckingham palace. Some of the gifts include a beaded throne and a novelty Buckingham Palace London Underground sign. The summer opening runs from 22 July to 1 October 2019.

The Queen celebrates two birthdays and the first is today. She was born on 21 April 1926 but her official birthday is usually held on the second Saturday of June. The official birthday is held in the summer because there is a better chance of good weather for the ceremony. George II started this dula-birthday tradition in 1748.

Her Majesty is the UK’s longest serving monarch. She became Queen on 6 February 1952 aged 25. Her Majesty became the world’s longest reigning living monarch following the death of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej last year. He died aged 88.
