Beauty Queen: Colorful Locks

f there is one thing we have learned from watching the runways season after season, it is that fashion doesn’t play by the rules and neither does beauty. On the contrary, beauty is often about breaking the rules, which is just one of the reasons we love the latest trend to sweep the celebrity world: colorful locks. Yes, dear readers, stylish starlets like Lauren Conrad, Sienna Miller and Kate Bosworth have all been spotted sporting multihued hairstyles, and while it might not be the most daring trend, it is certainly not for the faint of heart. On that note, today’s Beauty Queen story is devoted to finding out how you, too, can incorporate this playful look into your beauty regime! Read on!

Can I try this trend at home, or should I head to the salon?
This trend can be tricky, which is why most hair stylists recommend you do not attempt this look at home. However, if you do want to try a budget-friendly version of the look, Miguel Angarita, a celebrity hair stylist who regularly works with Elite Models, says you can put together your own version with “a highlighting kit and some Manic Panic hair color.”

Is this trend suitable for everyone?
According to Karuna Devi, a celebrity hair stylist who has worked with Angela Lindvall, Helena Christensen, and Chloë Sevigny, anyone can achieve “a variation of this look.” It is important, however, to keep your current hair color in mind. According to Miguel, when trying this trend on dark hair, make sure you “life out” most of the color and make it light enough so the shade you have chosen is “accepted by your hair.”

What products are best if you are trying this look at home?
Both Miguel and Karuna agree that bleach is a must-have if you want to try this look at home. Karuna also notes that you should make sure to get the best possible over-the-counter buffers, as if you get the bleach right, you won’t require gloss or toner. In addition, Miguel recommends picking up Manic Panic hair color in your favorite shade, or hair color from Elumen by Goldwell.

How should you apply the color if you are trying this look at home?
First, Karuna recommends parting your hair from the center of the forehead to the nape of the neck. Then, beginning at the nape of the neck, use the balayage technique to paint on each individual panel of color. If you need to bleach your hair first, Karuna recommends covering your hair with plastic cooking wrap so you can watch the color lift from your hair. Once your hair is at the desired level of lightness, remove the wrap.

How can you maintain this look?
According to Karuna, using a shampoo and conditioner meant for a “cool blonde” hair color is important. Also, do a heavy-duty hydration treatment every 7-10 days to nourish your hair and keep it hydrated. Karuna also recommends hydrating the tips of your hair with olive or coconut oil, to stave off dehydration caused by the coloring. Eventually, your colored locks will start to fade. When this happens, Miguel says: “You can reapply the tone or redo it again by bleaching or lightening your hair and adding another color.”

Any last words of advice?
Karuna says: “Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate your tips! If you don’t, you will end up with crispy-looking tips. You should always love and appreciate your locks as well as the choices you make for it.”

Miguel says: “Remember not to go overboard; it should be subtle.
